This week, a conversation with a longtime friend took an unexpected turn. Instead of skimming the surface, we allowed a little discomfort-some heat-to rise. We asked harder questions, listened more intently, and didn’t rush past the pauses. It wasn’t always comfortable, but it brought us closer, making our friendship feel stronger and more honest.

It reminded me of how, in Supported Boat Pose, we sometimes want to back away from the heat. Yet, when we stay-breathing, steady, curious-something shifts. We find new reserves of strength and a deeper connection, both to ourselves and to those we care about.

How to Prepare:

• Sit with knees bent, feet on the floor. Slide a bolster or folded blanket under your sit bones for support.
• Lean back slightly, keeping your spine long.
• Lift your feet off the floor, shins parallel to the ground. Hold behind your thighs or reach arms forward.
• Stay for 3–5 breaths, noticing the warmth building in your core.

Spiced Sweet Potato & Lentil Stew

Why It Works: The warming spices (cumin, ginger, turmeric) stoke digestive fire and support the solar plexus, while sweet potatoes and lentils ground and nourish the heart.

1 large sweet potato, cubed

1 cup red lentils

1 onion, diced

2 tsp cumin

1 tsp turmeric

1 tsp grated ginger

4 cups vegetable broth

Salt & pepper to taste

Sauté onion and ginger, add spices, then sweet potato and lentils. Pour in broth, simmer until tender. Serve warm, letting the heat of the stew mirror the warmth of your practice.
